The Tribune – HC dismisses Mann’s plea

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 13. The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed a petition filed by SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann seeking an independent probe into contesting of assembly and Parliamentary elections by Arvind Khanna from Sangrur, even though he is a “British citizen”.

In the petition filed in public interest, Mann had earlier sought directions to the Union of India, the State of Punjab and the DGP to “order an independent inquiry, preferably by the CBI, regarding the fact that Khanna contested the election for the post of MLA from the Sangrur legislative assembly constituency and for Parliament from the Sangrur parliamentary constituency, being a British citizen”.

The Tribune – Hondh-Chillar; AISSF to begin work on memorial next month

Perneet Singh, Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 13. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on March 6 this year laid the foundation stone of a memorial dedicated to those killed in the Hondh-Chillar carnage. Since then, there has been no work on the project.

The Jathedar had said: “The houses of Sikh families and the village gurdwara, lying in a shambles, will be preserved and a decision on any additions at the site taken later.” AISSF president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed had then announced that the Sikh Sangat had donated Rs 25 lakh for the memorial.

A bitterly disappointed Manvinder Singh Giaspur, who had revealed the carnage site, said: “The leaders clearly wanted to draw political mileage from the issue.”

He claimed that his plea to the Akal Takht Jathedar to take the matter forward had got a cold response.

Giaspur said he was now making efforts to set up a trust to raise the memorial at Hondh-Chillar. Giaspur, who hails from Ludhiana, lost his job in Gurgaon after he discovered the carnage site.

Peer Mohammed claimed that the Akal Takht chief had told them he would get the work done through the SGPC. He said the SGPC had been given two months to start work on the memorial. “Now that the SGPC has not responded even after six months, we have decided to start work from November 1.” He said talks were on with the local panchayat for taking over possession of land for the memorial. The Jathedar could not be contacted for comment.

The Hindu – Three Anna supporters assaulted outside court

New Delhi, October 14, 2011

A day after Team Anna member and senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan was assaulted by three activists of the Shri Ram Sena and the hitherto unknown Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, workers of these outfits attacked three supporters of Anna Hazare outside the Patiala House Courts complex here on Thursday.

The assailants fled before the police arrived.

Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, Vishnu Gupta and Inder Verma, who allegedly assaulted Mr. Bhushan in his Supreme Court chamber on Wednesday, were being taken around 5 p.m. to the Tihar Central Jail after being remanded in judicial custody for one day, when five supporters of Mr. Hazare standing outside the main entrance to the court started shouting slogans in support of Mr. Bhushan.

This led to an altercation between them and the supporters of the accused. The situation soon went out of control, and the miscreants attacked Anna’s supporters.

Three of the supporters, Rajkumar, 56, Mohammad Ahmed Saifi, 51, and Sheru Khan, 36, suffered injuries and were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Police said Rajkumar was seriously injured. “We had gathered to protest against the assault on Mr. Bhushan. We were not there to fight,” said an Anna supporter.

“We have registered a case of rioting, unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt. A hunt has been launched for the assailants. If necessary, we will contact the television news channels that captured the entire incident that lasted nearly seven minutes,” said an officer.

The Tribune – Terror strike averted as car with RDX seized in Ambala

Target Delhi, claims police; LeT-BKI hand suspected

Attar Singh & Sandeep Yadav, Tribune News Service

Ambala/New Delhi, October 13. A telephone call originating from Nepal and intercepted by Indian intelligence agencies enabled a joint police team from Haryana and Delhi last night to recover five kg of explosives, hidden in a blue Indica car parked outside the Ambala Cantt Railway Station.

The two occupants of the car, captured by CCTV cameras at a toll plaza, however, got away as the police decided against waiting for them to turn up beyond midnight. “We could not afford to wait because we were not sure what was inside the car and whether the explosives, which we suspected to be hidden inside, were timed to explode and when,” explained DCP (Special Cell) of Delhi Police, Arun Kampani.

An examination of the car, however, revealed that the explosives were not connected to detonators. The police identified the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and the Babbar Khalsa International ( BKI) as the terror outfits responsible for transporting the explosives from Jammu & Kashmir. The consignment was to be handed over to the BKI at Ambala, the police claimed, and taken to New Delhi for a terror strike, possibly before Diwali.

The stolen car displayed a fake registration number, which actually was traced to a car owned by a Panchkula-based business enterprise. Preliminary examination of the car, police sources disclosed, had revealed only an empty box of sweets, toll receipts and some copies of newspapers from J & K. A more comprehensive search, however, led to the recovery of the explosives wrapped in three brown envelopes and secured by adhesive tapes.

Five detonators were hidden in a plastic box while the two ‘ABCD timers’ were cleverly hidden in the cavity of the window rolling machine.

Central Intelligence agencies had passed on specific inputs on the movement of a LeT module in J & K, following which the investigation was taken up. A police team that was rushed to the border state gathered information that the explosives were being carried to Delhi by road. More inquiries led the police to find out details about the vehicle used and the route taken by the LeT operators.

National Security Guard ( NSG) commandos were rushed to Ambala as the police tracked the car and threw a cordon

round the area. Forensic experts joined them from Madhuban. The car, bearing the Haryana registration number HR 03 0054, was taken apart for clues and then was shifted to Delhi for investigation.

The car had passed the Lakhanpur toll barrier along the Jammu-Pathankot highway on Wednesday morning. Police has launched a manhunt for the duo who drove the car to Ambala while explosives have been sent for forensic analysis.

Meanwhile, Haryana police sources said preliminary search of the bonnet and the boot of the vehicle did not reveal anything suspicious. Search of the seats and the dashboard also did not reveal anything incriminating. It was only after the doors and the wheels were taken apart that the explosives were found hidden inside the front door of the car. The operation ended around 1 am. The sources also claimed that the car was originally sold to an Amritsar resident in 2005.

After that it changed several hands. The last owner is yet to be traced.

Dawn – National Assembly committee to meet Baloch leaders

By Ahmad Hassan

14 October 2011

Islamabad: The Special Committee of the National Assembly on Karachi and Balochistan decided on Thursday to meet the estranged Baloch leaders, some of whom are living abroad, to seek their support for restoring peace in the province.

Talking to reporters, the chairman of the committee, Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khursheed Shah, said the meeting had decided that members of the committee would visit Quetta next Thursday to meet members of parliament and the provincial assembly, ministers, tribal sardars and members of the civil society and the Baloch leaders who were not willing to talk to government’s representatives.

He said nationalist leaders Khair Bakhsh Marri and Ataullah Mengal and all others who had been refusing to meet anyone belonging to the government would be welcome to meet the committee in Quetta.

The committee was briefed by the Balochistan home secretary and Frontier Corps chief on the law and order situation in the province and steps taken by law-enforcement agencies.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik attended the briefing for some time but did not take part in the discussion.

Mr Shah said the committee would later visit Karachi to assess the situation there before preparing its recommendations for parliament.

Replying to a question, he said leaders of the parliamentary groups would be asked to nominate their representatives for the proposed oversight committee on the implementation of the resolution of the all party conference.
