The Tribune – Preneet Kaur, Raninder Singh make up for Captain’s absence in Patiala

Aman Sood, Tribune News Service

Patiala, May 17. With local MLA Captain Amarinder Singh opting to stay away from campaigning, his wife and MP Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh have been working hard to fill the void. The mother-son duo went on a whirlwind tour of Samana constituency and addressed a series of rallies in support of Congress candidates.

Winning the elections on her home turf would be crucial for the Union Minister (Preneet) as these would set the tone for next year’s parliamentary elections.

Raninder appeared leaving no stone unturned while trying to infuse confidence in the party cadre. He had lost the assembly elections from Samana to Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.

“The National Rifle Association of India working kept me busy in Delhi, but I was in constant touch with the local leaders in the constituency,” he said.

Lashing out at the Akalis, he said: “You voted for them (SAD-BJP) but what did you get in return? Theirs is a government of liars. So, get ready to teach them a lesson on May 19 (polling day).”

The next to target the ruling coalition was Preneet Kaur: “We will take the Akalis head-on and make sure they are not able to succeed in their evil designs to win the elections by rigging.”

At some distance from the Congress rally, Rakhra quipped that voters in his constituency would not even recognise the Congress leaders “who only turn up on poll eve”. “I have been working round the clock and despite my engagements as a Cabinet Minister, I make it a point to attend each and every person from Samana on a priority.”

The Tribune – His efforts ensured return of 17 Indians on death row in Sharjah

Prabhjot Singh, Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 13. “Sarbat da Bhalla” (welfare of all) is the motto of 56-year-old Surinderpal Singh Oberoi, a hotelier-turned-philanthropist who has been making it to media headlines not only for securing the release of 17 Indian youths from Sharjah jail but also for his liberal financial help to those in need.

Oberoi, who was born in Nangal, now manages not only Apex Emirates General Trading Llc and a hotel in Dubai but is also the chairman of the Apex Group of Companies.

Much before the release of 17 Indian boys in the Mishri Khan murder case two days ago, Oberoi had visited the homes of most of them and started paying a monthly pension to their families to mitigate their sufferings. Besides, he sponsored parents or spouses to visit convicted persons in Sharjah jail.

Other than these 17 youths, he has also got released so far 33 Indian expatriates who had been languishing in various jails of the UAE. “I have been fully supported by not only the staff of Indian Mission in the UAE but also by certain political bigwigs, including Minister of State for External Affairs Perneet Kaur and former Union Chemical Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.”

Among the beneficiaries has been a girl of Ludhiana who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case. Most of the releases secured by him were through payment of blood money to the families of the victims. He would visit the families, convince them for a settlement, pay them the blood money and get the settlement documents ratified by both the Indian and the UAE missions before submitting them to the UAE courts.

“I do not support any unlawful activity,” he reiterates, maintaining that he has been trying to help expatriate workers who had been lured into traps by those running all such illegitimate activities, including bootlegging. Because of shrinking job market and sharp fall in wages, expatriate workers get lured with big financial returns from such activities without ever releasing the implications.

The Tribune – Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee poll -2013; Majithia’s men camp in Sarna citadel

Jangveer Singh, Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 23. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Delhi president Paramjit Singh Sarna, who has had a easy run in Delhi for the past nine years, is now bottled in his own constituency of Punjabi Bagh by the Bikram brigade of Punjab Revenue Ministerand Youth Akali Dal (YAD) president Bikram Singh Majithia.

The Punjabi Bagh constituency is unique in so far as that it has two parts – one posh and the other a lower middle-class area inhabited by Sikhs mostly doing menial jobs. Sarna has till date ruled this constituency with the rich flocking to him because of his clout and the poor Sikhs seeking him out because of his power to dole out seats in various Sikh institutions run by the DSGMC.

The SAD has decided to take the battle for Delhi to Sarna’s constituency. The SAD leadership has posted its trouble shooter Bikram Majithia in this constituency and has chosen a multi-millionaire in Manjinder Singh Sirsa to take on Sarna. Sources say this strategy is aimed at giving the Sikhs of this constituency a leader as rich as Sarna. Sirsa, who has delved in the liquor and real estate business, has a palatial house in Punjabi Bagh.

With Majithia has come his brigade which includes Majha legislators loyal to him such as Virsa Singh Valtoha, Inderbir Bolaria and Baljit Singh Jalalusma.

Also, Bikram acolytes former Faridkot Improvement Trust Chairman Bunty Romana and Muktsar leader Rosy Barkandi are camping in the constituency with their supporters.

Voters of the constituency admit that Sarna has a tough fight on his hands with the Sirsa firmly entrenched in the area. The latter’s wife is a local councillor.

Dimpy Sodhi, an influential businessman whose father is a reputed homoeopath, said Sarna had realised that he was in a fight and was now concentrating on the constituency. He said Sarna was devoting most of his time to the constituency and had little time to campaign in other areas.

Sarna is relying on the Punjab Congress leadership to attract votes. Union Minister for External Affairs Preneet Kaur was in the constituency yesterday. Sarna denies that he is bogged down in Punjabi Bagh. “I campaigned in Kalkaji and Lajpat Nagar today and have come to Punjabi Bagh because Maharaj Sahib (Capt Amarinder) is in the constituency.”

He claimed that it was the SAD which had got bogged down in Delhi with the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, ministers and SGPC members “licking the dust of the streets in Delhi. We will beat them into shape and send them packing back to Punjab,” he added.

The Tribune – Patiala gang rape case, Accused being protected: Preneet

Tribune News Service

Patiala, January 2. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur today visited the family of the Patiala gang-rape victim at Badshahpur village in Patran sub-division of the district. Addressing a gathering of party workers in the village, Preneet flayed the state government for “delaying” action in the case which was initiated after directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

She said the matter could not end by taking disciplinary action against some policemen. “Certain influential people are trying to protect the culprits of this heinous crime. They terrorised the victim and kept threatening the family for over a month in a bid to suppress the rape incident, which forced the victim to commit suicide. These elements should be identified,” she alleged.

The minister was accompanied by PCC senior vice-president Laal Singh, Nabha MLA Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Rajpura MLA Hardial Singh Kamboj, Mohali MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, former MLA Nirmal Singh and Punjab Youth Congress President Bikram Chaudhary.

Sanaur MLA Laal Singh spoke on the working of the “polticised” police which follows the instructions of halqa incharge.

“We appreciate that the government has realised its mistake by saying that politicisation of the police will be checked,” he said.

The Tribune – Canada okays export of uranium to India Promises to act against ‘Khalistan’ activists

[The Khalistan issue was not covered in the BBC report, nor in the report in The Hindu. The Canadian government has no powers to stop peaceful campaigning. Unlike India, Canada is a democracy. Imagine what the reaction would be in Quebec if India took a stance against peaceful campaigning for its independence ! Man in Blue]

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 6. Giving an unprecedented boost to their ties, India and Canada today announced the conclusion of thorny negotiations over administrative arrangements for operationalising the civil nuclear deal, which would facilitate Canadian companies to soon start exporting uranium and nuclear reactors to this country.

The announcement ends close to four decades of tense relations between the two countries after Canada banned export of uranium to India in the wake of nuclear tests conducted by it in 1974.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also reassured New Delhi of his country’s determination to check the activities of ‘Khalistan’ supporters on the Canadian soil.

The two countries signed a social security accord and MoUs on cooperation in information communication technology and electronics and between DRDO and York University of Canada for cooperation in the areas of joint research and development in defence science and technology after talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.

”We welcome the recent progress made towards concluding the modalities for the effective operationalisation of the agreement on civil nuclear energy cooperation that we had signed in 2010,” Singh said at a brief media interaction jointly with Harper. On his part, the Canadian PM said: “Our government is committed to promoting greater trade and investment with India.

The conclusion of the administrative arrangement with India will facilitate opportunities for Canadian companies to play a greater role in meeting India’s growing energy needs. It is expected to generate millions of dollars in new business contacts between our countries and to create high-quality new jobs at home.”

The two sides had for long been holding negotiations to iron out differences on the nuclear accord. Ottawa was insisting that India must inform it how New Delhi was utilising the uranium exported by Canada companies. New Delhi, however, was of the view that such measures were not necessary since it was already complying with the standards set by the IAEA.

A joint statement issued at the end of the talks between the two leaders said they looked forward to the agreement on nuclear cooperation entering into effect shortly.

The two countries also agreed to institute a strategic dialogue at the level of foreign ministers. They identified energy cooperation, particularly exports of Canadian oil and natural gas as well as renewable energy cooperation as an area with enormous potential. A ministerial level energy dialogue would supplement the strategic dialogue and promote specific projects.

They reaffirmed their desire to conclude a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2013 and a bilateral investment promotion and protection agreement.

The activities of ‘Khalistan’ supporters in Canada came up for discussions during the meeting Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur had with the Canadian PM. The revival of ‘anti-India’ rhetoric in Canada was a matter of concern to India, she told Harper, pointing out that Punjab was witnessing a good situation of peace and progress after very hard times and would like this situation to prevail.

The Canadian PM said his country was firmly behind New Delhi on the subject of ‘Khalistan’.

Tribune News Service

Patiala, August 19. Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur has said that her ministry has not received any request for Indian citizenship or asylum from Pak Hindus who are on a visit to India. At a press conference at Moti Bagh Palace here today, she said the matter came under the domain of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Tribune – Australian envoy assures security to students

Preneet raises issue of transport concession for Indians in Victoria, New South Wales

Umesh Dewan, Tribune News Service

Patiala, December 16 The Australian government has given its firm commitment to ensure proper security and safety to students studying in Australia. The assurance was given by Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and Secretary, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Dennis Richardson during a meeting with Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur in New Delhi today.

Giving details of the meeting in Patiala, MP Singh, Additional Private Secretary to Preneet, said, “While discussing several bilateral issues, the Minister raised the long-pending issue of the transport concession to be extended to Indian students in the Federal States of Victoria and New South Wales.

The authorities in these two Federal States have been consistently refusing to grant concessional transport facilities to Indian students, which are normally enjoyed by the Australian students, despite the fact that Indian students pay much higher fees compared to domestic students.”

Responding to the matter, Richardson assured that the matter of granting transport concession to Indian students would be taken up suitably with the concerned authorities in the Federal States for their consideration, in view of the fact that the Indian students pay comparatively higher fees than the local students.

“Richardson informed Preneet that the Australian Government has undertaken extensive review of the international education sector, including re-registration of international education providers with a view to ensure that international students get quality education in Australia”, stated Singh.

After the meeting, Preneet expressed her satisfaction regarding the measures put in place by the Australian government to improve the safety and security of the Indian students in Australia. She, however, impressed upon the need that the proposed measures were followed through and resulted in a qualitatively improved experience on the ground for the Indian students in Australia.

The Tribune – Don’t campaign for Akalis, Captain to Kejriwal

Rajmeet Singh, Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 13. PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh today advised civil society activist Arvind Kejriwal to not to campaign for the Akalis while spearheading the anti-corruption campaign during the forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab.

Referring to the recently held Hisar elections, where the civil society held an aggressive anti-Congress campaign, the PPCC chief claimed that the campaign rather helped the HJC and the INLD. “If Kejriwal wants to come to Punjab, he should be aware of the Akali government from where four BJP ministers were removed for facing corruption charges,” the former CM said while addressing a rally as part of the Punjab Bachao Yatra at the Dasehra Ground here.

“I am warning the Akali leadership to stop harassing Congress workers. If the police is not performing its duty, we have to take the law and order in our own hands and reply in the same fashion,” he said, while trying to strike a chord with party workers as ticket aspirants had ensured a heavy turnout and could be seen jostling to sit near the former CM.

Captain Amarinder also questioned BJP leader LK Advani’s moral authority to lead an anti-corruption yatra in Punjab where his party had “crossed all limits of corruption”. The Akali leadership had grabbed the sand mines, liquor trade, transport business and the cable operations, he alleged.

Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, Punjab Congress in-charge, said if voted to power, the Congress would bring a strong Lokpal.

Minister of State for External Affairs Perneet Kaur claimed that the people of the state had already made up their mind to bring the Congress back to power.

Congress Legislative Party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and senior leader and CWC member Jagmeet Singh Brar also spoke on the occasion.

Those present included Mohinder Singh Gill, Balbir Sidhu, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Lakhwinder Kaur Garcha, Deepinder Dhillon, Rajbir Singh Padiala and Jagmohan Singh Kang.
