Havelock Road – Picture Drama
The Committee of the Southall Singh Sabha (Ltd) decided to remove a picture of the younger sahibzade (sons of Guru Gobind Singh) and Mata Gujri from their place in the main hall. They claimed that this was in order to get a clear view on the lift. Demonstrators moved into the hall and demanded bringing back of the picture to the position where it was. Informally I was told that there was a fear that this was just a first step, and that the picture of Sant-ji (Jarnail Singh) would be next in line for removal. I do not share this attachment to pictures. Man in Blue

21st April 2013 East Ham, London

The popular and colourful spectacle known as the Nagar Kirtan (procession) was attended by communities from across Greater and east London.

Procession started at Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar in Rosebery Avenue in East Ham passing through Romford Road, Green Street in Ilford.

Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar is a Sikh place of worship in Manor Park (East Ham), East London. The building is a converted church building that has been a Sikh Gurdwara for over 30 years.

Thousands of Local Sikhs got together from all over the Greater London area to take part in this Nagar Kirtan which celebrates the creation of the Khalsa at the Vaisakhi of 1699 in Anandpur Sahib. Amongst others 102 year Bhai Fauja Singh,  world’s oldest (retired) marathon runner was also present.

The Man in Blue – ‘Sikhí Works’ YouTube Video

I am Harjinder Singh, also known as ‘The Man in Blue’.

I am a Sikh, I am from the Netherlands, my biological age is 65 and I became an amritdhari Sikh on 14 July 1996.

I am a ‘white’ Sikh but I do not follow the yogi. I have been to many all-night kirtans but I am not with AKJ. I took amrit in Mehta Chowk in the Damdami Taksal Gurdwara, but I am not a Taksali.

The Guru instructed us before he passed away to follow Guru Granth and Guru Panth. I have been trying to practice this in my daily life since 1996.

I am not a saint, I am only human and make mistakes.

The YouTube video to which you find a link below is called ‘Sikhí works’. The meaning is simple : Those who follow the way of life as described by the Guru Granth Sahib will, as Guru promises, overcome ‘dukh’ (pain) and find ‘sukh’ (peace).

The interview was recorded in the Sangat TV studio in Southall and Pritpal Singh (‘The Dutch Sikh’ YouTube Channel) interviewed me.

Sangat TV – Harbans Singh and Dr Amarnath Kakkar discuss cremation issue in Kabul

Kabul – Bringing the body to cremation ground
Picture provided by Pritpal Singh

In this http://youtu.be/VcGgqr95eew talk-show at Sangat Television’s London Studio, Harbans Singh and Dr Amarnath Kakkar, both experts on Afghanistan, discussed the Cremation Issues faced by minorities in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Kabul, 16th November 2012

The dead body of Mrs Hari Kaur, resident of Shorbazar who passed away was taken to the Cremation Grounds in Qalacha-e-Ben-e-Hesar locality of Kabul for cremation. Residents of the neighbourhood where the Cremation Ground is located did not allow the cremation to take place.

Sikhs & Hindus once again demonstrated and only under Police protection and with media attention the cremation took place at 4 PM local time. Sikhs and Hindus along with their representatives and Afghan civilian government have yet to find a permanent solution to this pressing problem.

ਸਰਵ ਧਰਮ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ The Unity of Faiths Festival सर्व धरम संमेलन

The “Unity of Faiths” Festival was held recently in London. During this Inter-faith festival, representatives of many faiths and youngsters of a Gatka Akhara expressed their views on Unity and how to promote Inter-faith dialogues between different communities.

We should hold more of such festivals everywhere in light of the recent shootings at a Sikh place of Worship in US. This shall build bridges across the people of all faiths & no-faiths.

The largest open air Inter-faith festival in London “The aim was pure and simple; bringing together all communities to live in peace and harmony.”

Some of the key people who expressed their views:

1. Cllr Richard Barnes – Deputy Major of London

2. Rev Canon Andrew Tremlett – Westminster Abbey

3. Dr Onkar Sahota – London Assembly Member for Ealing & Hillingdon

4. Yasmin Sheikh MBE – Founder British Community Honours Awards

5. Imam Bismillah – Central Jamia Mosque, Southall

6. Giani Shamsher Singh – Granthi, Sikh Minister of Religion

7. Pavnish Kaur, Ram Kaur, Saprina Kaur, Sukhvir Singh & Navraj Singh – Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Gatka Akhara, Southall

8. Harbans Virdee – Namo Buddhay Vihara, Southall

9. Guatam Chakrovarty – Federation of Ambedkrite and Buddhist Organisations

The festival had its début last year on the 11th June 2011, in Southall Park, Ealing Borough, West London. It was attended by over 8,000 people and was watched on-line by 76,000 people from 23 countries.

The festival was opened by 12 multi-faith leaders; followed by various cultural acts of art, poetry, comedy, music and dance.

These acts not only entertained the crowds who joined in, but really promoted the sense of togetherness and community spirit that uplifts and unites any society.

This event enhanced the union of faiths and cultures and played a major role in Southall not being targeted 2 months later during the London Riots. The festival was mentioned and also praised by the British Prime Minister, Hon’ble David Cameron in the House of Commons at the time of the riots.

Religious leaders of the well-known faiths in Southall (Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Ba’hai, Muslim and Zoroastrian) all contributed by sharing their messages, declaring that each religion recognises that “God is Love, Love is God” and also pointing to the “Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man.

This year’s event took take place on Sunday, 8th July 2012 and was attend by over 25,000. The organisers introduced various different areas for the public to engage and interact through various zones – Education Zone, Interactive Zone, Faith Zone and Kids Zone.

This coverage is of UK’s community TV Station Sangat Television.
This programme was aired on 10th of August 2012.
