The Asian Age – Sasikala Natarajan to take over as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Once sworn in, Sasikala will be the third woman CM of the state after Janaki Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa

S Thirunavukarasu

Chennai, 6 February 2017. Two months to the day that charismatic J. Jayalalithaa passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest, V K Sasikala, the former’s close aide for 30 years, was on Sunday unanimously elected AIADMK legislature party leader, replacing incumbent O. Panneerselvam.

Ms Sasikala is likely to take the oath as chief minister of Tamil Nadu on February 9.

The much-awaited meeting of the AIADMK legislature party resolved to hand over the CM’s mantle to 61-year-old Sasikala, who came into contact with the late Jayalalithaa in 1983.

Her election brings back a long-held tradition in the party by which both a single person leads both the party and the government.

Interestingly, outgoing chief minister O. Panneerselvam, who had stood in for the late Jayalalithaa twice due to court cases and was sworn in after her death on December 5, proposed Ms Sasikala’s name for the top post in the state.

Once sworn in, Ms Sasikala will be the third woman CM of the state after Janaki Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa.

“I, O. Panneerselvam, Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK treasurer, propose a resolution to elect ‘Chinamma’ as leader of the AIADMK legislature party. I propose the resolution since we all feel that the head of the party and the government should be one and the same. And I have resigned as chief minister,” he told the meeting, amid thunderous applause from the legislators.

As Mr Panneerselvam, who held discussions with Ms Sasikala at the Poes Garden residence before the crucial meeting, moved the resolution which was passed unanimously, AIADMK cadres outside hall the went into celebratory mode, bursting crackers and distributing sweets. Ms Sasikala later said it was “my dear brother” Panneerselvam who had first proposed that “I should take over as the CM and party supremo”.

“The AIADMK government will follow the principles of Amma. We will always work for the welfare of the people,” she said.

“I was not in a position to accept the request (by OPS) and I agreed to take over as party supremo only after repeated requests from the partymen. Every partyman who met me during the last two months insisted that I should take over as the CM. Left with no option, I decided to heed to the request,” she said.

The Tribune – Dera Row: SGPC to form probe panel

DSGMC wants action against Sikh leaders

GS Paul, Tribune News Service

Amritsar, 5 February 2017. A day after the Akal Takht announced to initiate action against the Sikh leaders who recently sought the support of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda for the Punjab elections, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) declared that it would form a committee to probe the matter.

SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar said, “As soon as we receive the official communication from the Akal Takht, we will set up a panel to identify the leaders who attended the dera congregation and ascertain their purpose of going there. As per the Akal Takht Jathedar’s directions, action would be taken on the basis of the probe report.”

Meanwhile, the SAD-backed Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has submitted a complaint with Akal Takht, seeking stern action as per Panthic maryada against the “erring” leaders. “A copy of the complaint has been sent to the SGPC,” said DSGMC chief Manjit Singh GK.

The Akal Takht Jathedar maintained that the 2007 ‘hukumnama’ against dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was intact, while ruling out the resumption of the sect’s ‘satsang’.

In the run-up to the Assembly elections, SAD leaders of nine constituencies of Bathinda and Mansa had attended a meeting of the dera’s religious wing.

Dal Khalsa chief H S Cheema and spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said, “For 72 hours, Giani Gurbachan Singh kept quiet. The moment voting was over, he made an announcement for a probe. This is nothing but an eyewash.”

They observed that the Sikh electorate had already given its verdict against the Akalis for their wrongdoings, including hobnobbing with the Sirsa dera.

Hindustan Times – Amritsar-London direct flight from April 2017

Amritsar, Panjab, 5 November 2016. Beginning April 2017, direct flights will connect the holy city of Amritsar with London thrice a week.

With the aim to serve the Sikh community globally and promote tourism, UK-based People Over Profit (POP), a new low-cost, long-haul airline, will be launching its operations in April 2017. At present, there is no direct flight between the two cities.

“We thought of exploring this market as there is a huge demand (for travel to Amritsar) due to high Sikh population in (UK). We only have economy class to begin with, and the prices are very cheap,” said POP chairman Navdip Singh Judge.

The airline will run flights with seating capacity of up to 400 between Amritsar and the UK capital thrice a week. While a one-way ticket will cost £176 (around Rs 15,000), including taxes, the round trip will cost £350 (Rs 30,000).

The flight will take off from London at 7pm every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and reach Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, at 6am the next day. It will return to UK the same day at noon.

The Hindu – ‘BJP storm will blow away Akhilesh’

Modi asserted “Development for me is V for Vidyut (electricity), K for Kanoon (law) and S for Sadak (roads).”

Mohammad Ali

Aligarh, 5 February 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and the Congress had joined hands to save themselves from the BJP wave in the Assembly polls. He attacked the SP rule for encouraging mafias and goondaraj and blamed the State government for lack of growth in the world famous lock industry of Aligarh.

After his acronym ‘SCAM’ for the SP, Congress, Akhilesh and Mayawati on Saturday, Mr. Modi coined another at his rally on Sunday, VIKAS which, he said, stood for vidyut (electricity), kanoon (law and order) and sadak (roads).

Lock industry ruined

Addressing a huge rally at the Numaish ground in Aligarh, Mr. Modi said, “Here in front of me I can see a saffron sea. When a storm comes then every one looks for a safe shelter. Similarly in the storm of people’s support for BJP , Chief Minister here has joined hands with anyone he found. But the fact is that won’t save him from the storm.”

Mr. Modi accused the SP government of ruining the lock industry of Aligarh and said, “The present government of the State has nothing to do with development.

The Aligarh locks used to be world famous but now the State government has made sure that the manufacturing units were shut down and the Aligarh locks were used to lock them. The lock industry is no longer in great situation.”

“The manufacturing units were shut down because the State government in Lucknow could not provide them with electricity. People at tea stalls and hotels talk how electricity came on specefic days of a week.

But times have changed. We are working all day and night to ensure that electricity reaches every home. We are working for UP’s VIKAS,” Mr. Modi said.

Accusing the entire Opposition of ganging-up against him because of the Central government’s moves against corruption, Mr. Modi said, “These days some people are issuing fatwa against me because I have started tightening screws. Through demonetisation when I asked for an account of the crimes they have committed for the last 70 years. These people have nothing to do with development. They came together only to ensure that Modi doesn’t get a majority in Raja Sabha and he is unable to make laws to curb and expose their corruption.”

Recruitment scam

He raised the issue of allegations of corruption and discrimination in favour of youths belonging to the Yadav community in recruitment by the Akhilesh Yadav government and promised elimination of all kinds of corruption from the recruitment of government jobs in the State.

Widow’s pension

Expressing shock at the reports of “corrupt people withdrawing money out of a widow’s pension” from banks, Mr. Modi said, “the corrupt are flourishing under the present U.P. government. To stop this, we have from the Centre linked pensions to Aadhaar cards and bank accounts. Rs 40,000 crore of the treasury that these rats would have silently eaten, is now being saved.”

Addressing the gathering many of whom were farmers, Mr. Modi said “The Akhilesh government buys only three per cent of grains from farmers. But we gave Rs 22,000 crore to sugarcane farmers. Give us an opportunity, we will change the situation completely”.

Touting “shocking” crime figures to underline his point of the goondaraj in the State being patronised by the SP government, Mr. Modi said, “There are 24 rapes in Uttar Pradesh daily.”
