The Tribune – Ensure safety of Sikligar Sikhs: SGPC to MP CM

Amritsar, 30 April 2017. Peeved over the “discriminatory” attitude of the Madhya Pradesh Government towards Sikligar Sikhs, the SGPC has asked Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to intervene.

The move follows complaints of atrocities by the police and the administration on the community.

“I have apprised the Madhya Pradesh CM of the community’s significance in Sikhism and asked him to ensure its safety. We have received reports of police harassing Sikligar Sikhs on frivolous grounds. I have asked the Chief Minister to resolve the matter on priority,” Badungar said.

Named Sikligar by the 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh, they were known to be blacksmiths having incredible craft of weapon-making.

The nomadic community, which also made guns from iron for generations, has often come under the scanner of security agencies. They face neglect and lead a poverty-ridden life. The SGPC has planned several projects to help Sikligar Sikhs. (TNS)
