The Times of India – Twenty-four mobiles phones seized from Amritsar jail

Amritsar, 3 July 2017. As many as 24 cellphones and spare mobile batteries were seized by a team of senior officials led by DIG Prisons Surinder Saini that conducted a search inside the district jail here, including its high security zone and other barracks.

In the past four months more than 150 cellphones had been seized from the district prison in search operations. The police on Sunday booked more than 20 inmates for carrying cellphones.

The search operation was carried out in cell blocks, langar hall and de-addiction centre. Smart phones were recovered from two dreaded gangsters Gourav Sharma and Kamal Bori locked in cells situated in the high security zone. Another phone was found from gangster Ranjit Rana, who had been arrested by the special task force recently.

Around 33 gangsters are currently lodged in the district jail. According to officials, the surprise checking was based on inputs received about gangsters using smart phones and managing their gangs from within the jail.

Since members of different gangs are lodged inside the jail, the police have been shifting them to other jails to avoid any untoward incident.

The DIG said that, “Search operation will be a regular feature at the district jail in Amritsar to stop inmates from carrying out any illegal act.”
