Chandigarh – Panjab – India, 26 August 2018. Aam Aadmi Party MLA HS Phoolka has challenged Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to have a face-to-face debate on the alleged role of the Grand Old Party in the 1984 Sikh riots.

“Rahul Gandhi’s statement that Congress had no role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots is wrong. That’s why I’ve challenged him for an open debate about Congress’ and his father Rajiv Gandhi’s involvement,” Phoolka said.

“The massacre was organised by the Congress on directions of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The evidences with me will prove who was involved in the riots,” he added.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has, meanwhile, came in the defence of Rahul Gandhi, saying that the Gandhi scion was only in school during the time of Operation Bluestar, to which Phoolka said, “If he (Rahul Gandhi) was just 14 years old then, he should have said that he has no knowledge about the riots rather than giving a clean chit to the Congress.”

Describing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots a “very painful tragedy”, Gandhi in United Kingdom said, “I have no confusion in my mind about that. It was a tragedy, it was a painful experience. You say that the Congress party was involved in that, I don’t agree with that. Certainly there was violence, certainly there was tragedy.”

Nearly 3,000 Sikhs were killed in the riots in 1984 following the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards when the Congress government was in power at the Centre.
