Sikh24 Editors

New Delhi – India, 17 March 2019. Finally, Sajjan Kumar’s plea challenging the life term awarded to him by the Delhi High Court was taken up by the Supreme Court’s bench headed by Justice S A Bobde and Justice S A Nazeer on March 15.

It is notable here that the Supreme Court Judge Sanjiv Khanna, who was earlier appointed to take up the petition, had recused himself from hearing the plea on February 25.

During the hearing, the CBI opposed Sajjan Kumar’s plea by submitting an affidavit in which it said that Sajjan Kumar has been using his large political clout to derail the trial and influence witnesses.

Requesting the Court to quash Sajjan Kumar’s plea, the CBI said that Sajjan Kumar is capable of influencing or terrorizing witnesses in the case pending against him, if he is granted bail.

“The murders witnessed during the 1984 Sikh genocide fell under the category of crime against humanity on parity with well-known genocides worldwide like the large scale killing of Armenians by Kurds and Turks, mass extermination of Jews by Nazis, mass killing of Bangladeshi citizens by the sympathizers of Pakistani Army and mass killing during various ethnic riots within India also,” the CBI argued.

“The minority community was targeted by spearheaded attacks of dominant political actors like the applicant/convict (Kumar) and duly facilitated by law enforcement agencies,” CBI said.

“It took 34 valuable years of legal battle and courage shown by fearless witnesses/victims, which has resulted in his conviction and no leniency, therefore, on the ground of age should be granted,” read the CBI affidavit.

It may be recalled here that Sajjan Kumar was imprisoned for life by the Delhi High Court on December 17 in a case pertaining to brutal killing of five members of a Sikh family in the Raj Nagar of Delhi’s cantonment area on November 1, 1984. He had challenged the Delhi High Court’s verdict of convicting him till death on December 23 last year.

The prosecution lawyer Advocate Harvinder Singh Phoolka was informed about the Sajjan Kumar’s petition by the Supreme Court via registered post.

Later, Sajjan Kumar had to surrender before a Delhi trial court on December 31 last year to serve life sentence awarded to him by the Delhi High Court as the his plea couldn’t be taken up for hearing by the Supreme Court of India.

One Mile at a Time – Disgusting: comedian mocks Sikh passengers, feels “scared”

USA, 17 March 2019. There’s a story going viral at the moment that’s both disgusting and confusing, no matter how you slice it. It involves the actions of a comedian on a flight. I’ll share what we know and then what we don’t know.

Jess Moore is an Instagram comedian with 4.4 million followers (I hadn’t heard of her before), and she’s also on Fox’s Rel (again, I hadn’t heard of that before either). While taking a flight earlier today she decided to film the heads of Sikhs in front of her.

She zoomed in on their heads, gasped audibly, and claimed she was scared. She got a lot of backlash regarding this, so then filmed a follow-up video and went on a tirade about how she isn’t racist:

“If I’m scared I’m scared. F*** y’all, f*** how y’all feel. Y’all mad at me because I don’t side with any other black person, because I don’t side with every other race. F*** y’all. I feel how I feel. I felt threatened and that was it. F*** y’all, and I’m not flying there. We were evacuated, b****. Why? Why? With no technical difficulties or nothing.”

Apparently everyone was taken off the plane, and then eventually let on, but the Sikh passengers weren’t back on the plane, according to her.

While she deleted the Instagram Story, she later followed this up by “apologizing” while also doubling down on not being racist and admitting to being ignorant about being Muslim while also saying she has Muslim family.

I’m disgusted by all of this. Especially as this comes just shortly after over 50 Muslims were killed in New Zealand. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if she lives in her own little world and didn’t realize that, since she also didn’t realize there were “different types of Muslims.”

What’s not clear in this story is:

  • What route and airline she was flying
  • Why she felt scared, since she never clarified
  • Why everyone was taken off the plane; she claimed there was no mechanical problem, and also claimed it was unrelated to her video
  • Why the passengers she was mocking weren’t back on the plane, according to her.

Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sikh passengers were in fact on the plane, and if everyone was taken off for a mechanical problem, and she just claimed that wasn’t the case to save face. And I also wouldn’t be surprised if the reason she was scared was simply because they looked different to her.

The ignorance of some people is really sad. It’s especially sad when they have a big following, and make this kind of stuff seem okay. And I’m sorry Jessica, if you get canceled from your show it’s not because you’re “human,” it’s because you’re an insensitive racist who needs to get a clue. Or at least that’s my take…

Does anyone have more information on what exactly happened here? There’s limited info answering the above questions, and I figure if there’s any group of people that can get to the bottom of this, it’s you guys.

The Hindu – India keeps Khalistan threat off Kartarpur talk

Issue was consciously kept out of the agenda to focus more on the corridor

Vijaita Singh & Suhasini Haidar

New Delhi – India, 16 March 2019. India did not raise the issue of Pakistan supporting the Khalistani movement during the March 14 delegation-level talks to discuss the modalities of the Kartarpur Corridor.

A senior government official who attended the meeting told The Hindu that the Khalistan threat was deliberately not put on the agenda.

“We did not want to give Pakistan an opportunity to deviate from discussing the modalities of the corridor, which is a priority for us. Had we brought in other issues, they would have transgressed, defeating the purpose,” said the official.

Overseas groups

The government’s stand comes amid concerns of secessionist groups, including Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a USA – Canada based group, planning to organise a convention on ‘Khalistan-Referendum 2020’ at the Kartarpur shrine.

Indian security agencies have raised concerns about Pakistan using the corridor to push the Khalistani agenda from across the border. The official said that while the possibility of Pakistani agencies trying to radicalise Sikh youth existed, India would have to trust its citizens.

A source said the Khalistan issue might have not been raised during the delegation-level talks, but over the years India has raised it with Pakistan.

The source also said these concerns were being raised with the USA, Canada and other countries whose citizens are participating in the protests.

Interestingly a day before the talks were held at Attari, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan met pro-Khalistan activist Gopal Singh Chawla in Islamabad along with members of other minority communities.

The source said during the inaugural ceremony of the Kartarpur corridor last year, India had objected to the presence of Mr. Chawla.

Amarinder’s caution

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday said India’s agenda may be religious but Pakistan’s is totally disruptive. “While Pakistan Prime Minister talks of peace, their Army Chief continues to promote his evil designs.

Number of ISI-backed terror modules busted in Punjab in recent months indicated their true intent,” the Chief Minister said.

Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, S C L Das led the Indian delegation and the Pakistan delegation was led by Mohammad Faisal, DG (SA & SAARC) of Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After the meeting, India accused Pakistan of doublespeak and said the actual offer made by the neighbouring country was “farcical and mere tokenism.”

On the referendum, the source said it was not linked to the Kartarpur corridor, and it cannot be held by citizens of another country and many people agitating were not citizens of India. The source said a minuscule population of Sikhs want to hold agitations and they were a small minority of overseas Sikh communities in Canada USA etc.

Sikh bodies have been petitioning both the Governments to build a pilgrim corridor over the border from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur to Kartarpur in Pakistani Punjab’s Narowal province.

The plan is to complete the project by 23 November 2019, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, spent the final years of his life at Kartarpur.
